World leaders react to Israel’s attacks in Lebanon; see

As Israel continues to carry out attacks in Lebanon, world leaders are reacting to recent attacks that have killed more than 500 people and injured thousands.

Israel’s new offensive against Hezbollah has fueled fears that nearly a year of conflict between Israel and the Hamas group in Gaza could destabilize the Middle East.

Here’s what some world leaders are saying:

China

Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi has criticized Israel’s airstrikes in Lebanon, saying he and his government “strongly condemn acts that violate basic norms of the international order.”

Iran

The country’s Foreign Ministry spokesman, Nasser Kanaani, warned Israel of “dangerous consequences” following the attacks in Lebanon.

United Nations

UN Secretary-General António Guterres called on Israel and Hezbollah to stop fighting immediately on Monday (23) as world leaders prepared to gather on Tuesday for the UN General Assembly.

European Union

EU foreign policy chief Josep Borrell said the death toll from Israeli strikes in Lebanon was “alarming” and called on the UN Security Council to “play its role”.

“We urgently need to stop the path to war. Both sides need to implement an immediate ceasefire,” Borrell said on X.

United States

“My team is in constant contact with their counterparts and we are working to de-escalate tensions in a way that allows people to return home safely,” President Joe Biden said at the end of a bilateral meeting with the president of the United Arab Emirates (UAE) in the Oval Office on Monday (23).

Qatar

Qatar’s foreign ministry condemned the airstrikes, saying “this reality exacerbates crises, puts the region on the brink of the abyss and exposes it to further tensions that will have a profound impact regionally and internationally.”

Egypt

Egypt issued a statement expressing its solidarity with Lebanon and affirmed its “categorical rejection” of any violations of Lebanon’s sovereignty and its territories.

Jordan

Jordan also expressed solidarity with Lebanon and called on the UN to take action.

“Israel continues to push the region towards the abyss of an all-out regional war because the international community has failed to protect its laws and values,” said Ayman Safadi, the country’s foreign minister.
