World football legend Franz Beckenbauer has died at the age of 78

At the age of 78, the legend of German and world football, Franz Beckenbauer, breathed his last.

Franz Beckenbauer, born September 11, 1945, was a German former soccer player, coach and factor in German soccer. He is regarded as one of the most important football players in history.

In the IFFHS elections he emerged third best of the 20th century after Pele and Johan Cruyffwhile he was sixth in special voting among Ballon d'Or winners organized by French magazine France Football in 1999. As captain of the then West Germany team, he led them to the 1974 World Cup.

He started his career in the team Munich 1860from which he left for Bayern Munich, where he established himself as a central defender, regarded as the greatest defender in history. With Bayern was crowned West German champion five timesas three times European championwhile himself twice won the Ballon d'Or award.

After retiring from active duty, pursued a coaching career taking over his country's national team squad, which it led to two World Cup finals and a title. He also had a successful career as an administrative officer for a number of years in Bayern, the German Football Association, but also in positions of international responsibility.
