Ukraine President Volodymyr Zelensky said on Monday that the world did not want to wait until May 8 so that the ceasefire announced by Russian President Vladimir Putin in the war of more than three years came into force.
“For some reason, everyone should wait until May 8th and only then have a ceasefire to ensure Putin’s calm during the parade,” Zelensky said in a video speech.
“We value people’s lives and not exhibitions. We believe the world believes there is no reason to wait until May 8th. And the ceasefire should not last a few days to resume the killing later.”
Zelensky has called for a “total and unconditional ceasefire for at least 30 days” to provide “a base for real diplomacy.”
The Russian government announced on Monday (28) a temporary ceasefire between May 8 and 11 due to public holidays, asking Kiev to do the same.
The truce serves to mark the 80th anniversary of the victory of the Soviet Union and its allies in World War II.
Russia stated that the 72-hour ceasefire would be in place from early May 8 at the end of May 10, and Russia asked Ukraine to join him.
