World Bank announces emergency aid to Rio Grande do Sul

The World Bank announced this Friday (11) that it made US$125 million available, equivalent to more than R$600 million in emergency resources for Rio Grande Sul. The floods that hit the state left at least 126 dead.

According to the statement published by the World Bank, resources were reallocated from projects already underway, such as the “Urban Resilience Program in Southern Brazil”, “Revitalization Program for the Central Area of Porto Alegre”, and “Support Program for the New Bolsa Família”.

The institution also reported that it has teams providing technical assistance in damage assessment and execution of funds. The World Bank also said that it was available to help authorities at federal, state and municipal levels to prioritize the most urgent needs and coordinate with other partners.

The availability of new resources for the reconstruction of the state is also being discussed with the Regional Development Bank of the Far South (BRDE).

“The World Bank sympathizes with the population of the state of Rio Grande do Sul, so affected by the recent disaster,” said Sophie Naudeau, Interim Director and World Bank Operations Manager for Brazil.

“We have extensive experience in managing crisis situations and reconstruction linked to natural disasters in several countries around the world and we are contributing this knowledge to the rapid recovery of the state. We are also ready to work together with the competent authorities to prevent future disasters like this from causing so much personal and material damage,” added Naudeau.
