Women are more susceptible to melasma; Find out why and how to prevent

In summer, marked by high temperatures, the diagnosis of melasma Returns to the center of the discussion, especially because it requires extra care with the skin.

THE CNN , Lucas Miranda dermatologist and member of the Brazilian Society of Dermatology, explains that the condition is a chronic skin hyperpigmentation, characterized by irregular brownish spots usually symmetrical and that appear mainly on the face.

Being influenced by genetic factors , hormone and environmental the melasma affects the epidermis and the dermis, being also enhanced by the great exposure to ultraviolet (UV) radiation and visible light , cutaneous inflammation and other aspects of the environment, such as pollution.

“Melasma occurs due to excessive melanocyte stimulus (cells responsible for melanin production), leading to the irregular deposit of pigment on the skin. This stimulus can be triggered by hormones (estrogen and progesterone), sun exposure, heat and oxidative stress ”, comments the professional.

Melasma is more susceptible in women

Although it may affect men, the Melasma is more common in women even reaching 35% of Brazilian reproductive age . “This is due to hormonal influence, which stimulate melanin production. Pregnancy and the use of oral contraceptives are additional risk factors, ”says Lucas.

Although it does not have a definitive cure, the dermatologist Ana Carolina Suman member of the Brazilian Society of Dermatology, says that there are several approaches to your control.

Despigmentant creams containing ingredients such as hydroquinone, glycolic acid, kojic acid and tranexamic acid can be effective in bleaching of spots. Procedures such as chemical peels and laser are also options, but should be indicated and accompanied by a dermatologist, ”he warns.

Lucas also adds that the condition requires a combined approach treatment. “Strict photoprotection is critical, with the daily use of wide spectrum sunscreen, including visible light protection, as well as physical barriers such as hats and glasses,” he comments.

“In some cases, the use of oral medications may be indicated to assist in the control of pigmentation. Dermatological follow -up is essential to define the best therapeutic strategy and minimize recurrences, ”he adds.

The best form of protection, as the professionals point out, involves intense photoprotection, with sunscreens, physical barriers (hats and glasses) and use of topical antioxidants (such as vitamin C). Prolonged exposure to the sun and excessive heat is also required.
