Social educator Denise Correia Santiago, 45, plans to file a lawsuit against Colgate after undergoing an unexpected reaction in the mouth when using Colgate Clean Mint toothpaste. The consumer reports that she has been lips extremely swollen for five days, as well as redness and burns in the region.
The reaction occurred after continuous use of the product, whose sale had been temporarily banned by the National Health Surveillance Agency (Anvisa) on March 27. However, the decision was later suspended on March 30, again allowing the marketing of toothpaste.
According to Denise, the most intense symptoms, such as redness, swelling and burns, began to emerge after five days of regular use. On March 27, she noticed a wound in her tongue and the next day her lips were significantly swollen.
“Who sees this lip here thinks I made a lip fill. The lips swell and burned inside. I had burns on the tongue, sores, and my tonsils began to swell and sore,” Denise said. She suspended the use of the product, but still has pain and difficulty eating.
Initially, Denise did not associate the symptoms with toothpaste and sought medical attention in an emergency room due to severe swelling and inner redness in the mouth.
She reported that the doctor informed her about the risk of glotting closure due to swelling, being medicated with anti -allergic and kept under observation. Denise only discovered the cause of her symptoms when she saw news about others who had similar reactions when using the same toothpaste.
Denise’s lawyer, Victor Hugo Pazini Baltazar Herculano da Silva, said that due to the change in toothpaste formula, several consumers had side effects such as swelling, redness and burns. He stressed that, according to the Consumer Protection Code, the company is objectively responsible for all damage caused to affected consumers.
“We will take all appropriate legal measures to repair all the physical and psychological damages suffered with the event,” said the lawyer.
He mentioned that, after the repercussion of the case, the company sent only an email with a questionnaire for Denise to answer, without showing any genuine concern with his health.
In a statement, Colgate reported that it is following the demonstrations related to the total dental cream Active Prevention Clean Mint and deeply regrets reports of adverse reactions by some consumers.
The company claims to be treating each case carefully and pledges the facts, confirming having contacted Denise Correia this week.
Anvisa
The National Health Surveillance Agency (Anvisa) had banned the sale of all Colgate Clean Mint lots on Thursday, March 27, after reports of adverse effects. However, the measure was suspended after a company appeal on March 30. Nevertheless, the agency issued an alert on March 28 for consumers to interrupt the use of the product if they observe undesirable reactions.
Anvisa’s warning covered all dental creams containing tin fluoride in its formulation, a substance known for its antimicrobial benefits and anti -ceria. The agency recommended that manufacturers include information on possible adverse reactions and proper use instructions.
In a statement, the agency explained that “health professionals should monitor signs of oral changes, guide patients on possible adverse reactions and recommend alternatives to sensitive individuals.”
Colgate pointed out that Anvisa’s decision applies exclusively to the total clean Mint variant, not affecting other brand dental creams, and reiterated that the product does not pose health risks, although some people may present sensitivity to it. The company has made itself available to address any questions about the product with authorities, professionals, customers and consumers.
