Woman dies after being trapped in car underwater during rains in Recife

A woman died, this Wednesday (3), in Recife after being trapped underwater in her car when passing through a tunnel, which was flooded due to the rains in the region.

The episode took place in the Felipe Camarão tunnel, in the Jordão neighborhood, in the south zone of the capital of Pernambuco.

The driver of the car that was submerged, according to authorities, was a woman in her 60s.

The Fire Department was called at 08:37 to rescue the victim, but she was not rescued in time.

“Three teams were called, one from the Maritime Group, one from the Search and Rescue Group, in addition to a Self Rescue team”, the firefighters informed the CNN, per note.

“The body was left in the care of the Military Police and Scientific Police garrison,” added the note.

According to Climatempo, the states of Pernambuco and Alagoas faced a meteorological phenomenon called “Waves of the East”. This happens when trade winds – which move from the west coast of Africa to the American continent – ​​cause instability and heavy rains.

“Part of the Northeast still has frequent rain until the beginning of next week, at least. Inland, the rain is concentrated between Wednesday and Thursday only. In the eastern part of the Region, it still rains at various times in the next few days. There is even a relief between Friday and Saturday, but on Sunday the flow of humidity intensifies and it rains more persistently”, pointed out Climatempo.
