“Strict sanctions on Turkey if it dares to proceed with the annexation of the occupied areas in Northern Cyprus which are the territory of the Republic of Cyprus and the EU”, demands the MEP of the ND, Manolis Kefalogiannis, with a question he submitted to the European Commission.
Mr. Kefalogiannis states that “July 20 marks 48 years since the Turkish invasion of Cyprus, which remains to this day the only country in the European Union where 37% of its territory is under foreign occupation” and calls for “serious sanctions against of Turkey if the intense rumor that exists is confirmed that on the anniversary of the sad anniversary the Turkish President, who will visit the Occupied Territories, is expected to announce the annexation of the Occupied Territories to Turkey”.
Specifically, as noted in the relevant announcement, “July 20 marks 48 years since Turkey’s illegal military invasion of Cyprus, an anniversary disgrace for the Europe of Democracy and Freedom”, as “the Republic of Cyprus, 48 years ago, is the only EU country where 37% of the territory is under occupation”.
“Turkey and the Turkish Cypriot side are torpedoing every effort to resolve the Cyprus issue and reunify the Island against the decisions of the United Nations and Community law by stating that they are only discussing the solution on the basis of two states”, Mr. Kefalogiannis emphasizes in his question, adding that “Greece and the Republic of Cyprus stand steadfastly committed to the decisions of the UN Security Council and to the just and sustainable solution of the Cyprus issue on the basis of a bi-communal, bi-zonal federation”.
“On the sad anniversary of the invasion, the Turkish President will visit the Occupied Territories and there is a strong rumor that he is expected to announce the annexation of the Occupied Territories to Turkey. After all, the “Turkey-pseudo-state cooperation protocol” has created the basis for the pseudo-state’s integration into Turkish territory with a confederation model, which will preserve the so-called “independence” of the so-called “Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus”, the ND MEP points out.
“Unfortunately, the opening of the closed city of Famagusta (Varosia) may have encouraged the Turkish President and Turkish aspirations, as the European Union and the UN were left with only verbal condemnations and not the necessary measures and sanctions. If Turkey pursues the next step with the annexation of all the Occupied which constitutes the territory of the European Union, in which the application of the acquis has simply been suspended, precisely because of the occupation, it is necessary to take all the necessary measures and impose heavy sanctions”, he adds.
For the above reasons, the European Commission is asked “if Turkey proceeds with the annexation of the Occupied Territories, which are EU territory, what measures-sanctions against Turkey, which remains an accession country, intends to take”.
