With built-in avatar and capable of reorganizing documents: this makes the computer smarter

It is now clear: artificial intelligence will revolutionize our way of relating to technology. The introduction of AI on smartphones is already a reality and the invasion will very soon also concern televisions, our cars and obviously our laptops. Yes, because some manufacturers have begun to integrate AI into personal computers to make complex things more immediate, unlock new possibilities and increase productivity.

This was given by Microsoft with the introduction of the button CoPilotwhich quickly activates Microsoft's generative AI-based assistant: a small but significant innovation from a deeper change which brings us towards the advent of AI PCs. Intel CEO Pat Gelsinger considers it an “epochal change in technological innovation”. Net of marketing narratives, it is provable that even if we are not faced with the AI Personal Computers of the future, the arrival of PCs with artificial intelligence is certainly a turning point in the sectorthanks to a growing availability of software powered by AI algorithms that will allow us to work better and smarter.

AI PCs: What they are and what they are used for and why they are “sustainable” from all points of view

The first AI PCs were presented last year CES Las Vegas. A new family of laptops, tablets and notebooks that differ from “traditional” PCs in only one thing: they contain a neural processing unit (NPU) dedicated to the execution of the most complex calculations and artificial intelligence algorithms . These are the new processors from the large x86 manufacturers, Intel (Core Ultra) and AMD (Ryzen 8040), which serve precisely to speed up functions based on artificial intelligence because the calculation takes place “inside” the PC and not remotely in the data centers.

If until now generative AI services required huge data centers with thousands of CPUs and GPUs to work, today, with the new dedicated processors, much of the AI work will be processed by the PCs themselves. This brings advantages in terms of efficiency, privacy, security and customization, as well as reducing costs and energy impact. Data centers, in fact, are extremely energy intensive and require large quantities of water for cooling. Reducing their use therefore means saving energy and reducing CO2 emissions.

But how can these applications be useful to us? Think about a video conference and the need to blur the background, ensure that your gaze remains centered in the frame and that the camera follows your movement. Another example is the ability to transcribe in real time what is being said in an online meeting, or remove objects from a photo or video with one click, quickly generate texts for an email or a Power Point, as happens with the new Office suite enhanced with Copilot.

PC AIs are now available (with many more to come)

The first to seize the opportunity and allow users to exploit the capabilities offered by artificial intelligence thanks to the new processors are Dell And Lenovo and others will join. Lenovo itself presented the juiciest news at CES in Las Vegas, with a complete range of over 40 new devices and solutions based on artificial intelligence. One of these, present in the PC series Lenovo Yoga with Microsoft Windows 11, it is Lenovo Yoga Creator Zone, an integrated image generation software, turns text-based descriptions or even notes into stunning images without instructions, code or complex setup. The software can be further “trained” with user data and above all it does not need a connection: thanks to the computing power of the processors it can carry out AI-based processing locally.

All new models Lenovo they obviously come with the Copilot button, which provides faster access to Microsoft's AI assistance. Even on the range ThinkBook, intended for office work, the first computer manufacturer in the world has adopted Intel Core processors with neural units to speed up AI-based functions, primarily Microsoft Copilot. Among these is the new ThinkBook Plus Gen 5 Hybrid, a flexible hybrid solution with a basic laptop and tablet system that can work independently or together and easily switch between Windows and Android system. To top it off, Lenovo has also formalized the introduction, in mid-2024, of Lenovo AI Nowa custom AI solution designed to enable end-user interaction with natural language, to control and change common settings such as display or performance, search and summarize emails and documents, create meeting invitations, and merge live camera and avatar during video conferences.
