The wife of former Peru president Ollanta Humala, Nadine Heredia, asked for asylum at the Brazilian Embassy in Peru on Tuesday (15), according to a statement from the Peruvian Chancellery.
A Peruvian court sentenced, on Tuesday (15), former President Ollanta Humala to 15 years in prison for receiving illicit campaign funds from Brazilian construction company Odebrecht, which made him the latest former leader in the country to be arrested.
Humala and his wife were accused of receiving Odebrecht funds, now known as Novoonor, in his successful 2011 election campaign.
Humala’s wife, Nadine Heredia, was also sentenced to 15 years in prison on Tuesday.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs informs the public that the Embassy of the Federative Republic of Brazil in Peru announced that Mrs. Nadine Heredia Alarcón joined her embassy this morning.
Mrs. Heredia requested asylum in that country, according to the 1954 Diplomatic Asylum Convention, of which Peru and Brazil are parts.
Both governments are in constant communication on this situation.
