Widower of Paulo Gustavo says that children ask their father: “Why did you go to heaven?”

Doctor Thales Bretas participated in the program “Conversa Com Bial”, last Friday (11), and revealed how he deals with the questions of his children, Romeu and Gael, about the absence of Paulo Gustavo, a comedian who died in 2021 from complications from Covid-19.

The doctor said that, in the beginning, it was more challenging for the little ones to deal with the issue of death but that, nowadays, they already approach the subject with greater curiosity.

“For a long time I wanted to keep their memories fresh, so they would always remember moments with Paulo. And then sometimes I wanted to show a video, a photo. And for a while, at the beginning, I realized that it was challenging for them, they would leave, change the subject, not understanding why this father was absent, if it was abandonment. I always explained what happened: that he got sick and went to heaven. He always played that joke. From time to time, now that they are older, we bring up the subject, they ask more and more, they are more curious about life”, he said.

In addition, Thales told an episode in which he was moved when Romeo vented that he did not want to have lost his father Paulo.

“One day Romeo asked me, ‘but why did papa Paulo go to heaven?’. Because he got sick, son. There are moments when we get sick, can’t get better and go to heaven. ‘But I didn’t want Papa Paulo to go to heaven.’ That was now, three to four years ago, I see that he has more difficulty processing this. At the time, I even swallowed the tears and said: ‘I didn’t want a child either, at all'”, he declared.

Bretas also explained that children are curious to know the composition of families and question why they have two parents, instead of a father and a mother.

“I explain that you had two parents who loved you very much. We borrowed two bellies to make because we’re men and we can’t have them and they brought you with a lot of love and one of the daddies got sick and there’s Daddy Tata here. This is the family format. There are children who don’t have a father, children who have two mothers, I always bring this up with them”, he said.

Paulo Gustavo and Thales Bretas are the parents of Gael and Romeu, now almost four years old, generated through a surrogate. In the Father’s Day special, the doctor revealed that he maintains sadness as a predominant feeling, but that he has a great deal of indignation on the subject.

“I have sadness as a predominant feeling, more than anger, because anger does not solve. But there is a strong feeling of indignation, and a desire to move too, against everything that was unsustainable, ”she explained.
