“Why do I hesitate to tell people that I am a gypsy”

Chandlle, when she started a new job, wondered if she had to reveal her gypsy origin. The 23 -year -old from Bedfordshire is proud of her ancestry, but admits that she sometimes felt “nervous” to share it because of the negative depictions of her community in the media. “When you watch movies, it’s always like they say ‘these are the Gypsies, they are the bad ones,'” he explains. Chandelle participates in the BBC documentary “Growing Up Gypsy” with presenter Stacey Dooley, who watches three young Roma women as they face the challenges of everyday life. The screening of the documentary coincides with the intervention of the Friends Charity, Families and Travelers (FFT), which is working to end the discrimination against the Gypsy, Roma and Nomads community (GRT).
