iPhone 14 is the first series of Apple smartphones to have a display size of at least 6 inches. The mini version beloved by some users is missing this year, it has been replaced by the Plus version. Has the company abandoned the idea of releasing compact smartphones?
Apple fans have been asking for a small-screen version of the iPhone with modern hardware all the time. The company listened to their request and in 2020 introduced the iPhone 12 mini. Then it seemed that this form factor would continue for several years, but the model was prematurely discontinued, although it received its further development. Apple’s first concern came when US sales of the iPhone 12 mini fell short of forecasts, with just 6% of units sold in October and November 2020, according to Consumer Intelligence Research Partners (CIRP). In early 2021, Counterpoint Research stated that the mini version accounted for only 5% of all new series sales as of the first half of January.
In January 2021, Morgan Stanley Corporation announced that Apple decided to cut production of the iPhone 12 mini by two million units in order to increase production capacity for the more popular iPhone 12 Pro. Later, another financial conglomerate, JP Morgan Chase, said that Apple will completely stop production of the iPhone 12 mini in the second quarter of 2021. Sales reports for this smartphone model did not bode well, but by that time the company had already planned the production of the iPhone 13 mini.
In April 2022, Consumer Intelligence Research Partners released a report showing that the iPhone 13 mini accounts for just 3% of new-series smartphone sales, half that of the iPhone 12 mini. This data was probably the main reason for the failure of such an iPhone form factor. Apple has decided to replace the mini version with a new model in the iPhone 14 series. In a way, the iPhone 14 Plus mirrors the iPhone 12 mini, offering the latest features but with a different display size. Instead of a light and compact smartphone, buyers can choose a device with a larger screen and a larger battery. This is the same iPhone Max, but at a lower price.
