Why Albania is no longer “Europe’s best kept secret”

Its tourism officials Albania expect up to 10 million tourists this year as visitors opt for stunning beaches and low costs, Euronews reports. “Albania is expecting a huge influx of tourists this year, attracted by its 450km long Riviera and beaches that take your breath away”.

The trend has been evident since early spring and tour operators expect visitors to increase.

The head of the Association of Tourist Agents in Saint Saranda, Arben Cipa, has noticed a significant increase, as well as diversity in visitors. “I think this year we might even reach 200% [της πελατείας] compared to last year”.

Flora Xhamani Baba, managing director of Travel Magazine Balkan, agrees and says there is steady growth. “There is a progressive increase of 20-30% every year. Thus, the number of tourists is 30% higher every year and will undoubtedly be higher this year as well.”

Why is Albania becoming so popular?

The tourists they are attracted by Albania’s natural beauty, affordable prices and the welcoming nature of Albanians, writes Euronews.

The average cost of hotel services with full board for one day’s stay ranges from 30 to 300 euros and for these reasons, tourists who visit Albania say they are likely to return again.

A Dutch tourist stated: “We have good food here, the sun is shining, the sea is beautiful, everything is good. For us they are very cheap and they are beautiful and not too crowded.”

Other visitors agree. “What I like most about Albania are the people,” explained one German tourist. “The people are really very nice. Everywhere we go people stop and ask us if we need help.”.

Another described her as “beautiful, really beautiful”. When asked if they would return, they replied: “I will return many times.”

Albania had 7.5 million tourists in 2022, but the Institute of Statistics of Albania reports that from January to April, there were 3.54 million visitors, which represents an increase of 35%.

The Ministry of Tourism, in its forecasts for 2023, states that the goal is to accommodate approximately 10 million tourists.
