Who will be favored by Meloni – The “rich” Italian north or the “poor” south?

A walk through the neighboring country’s press and social media is enough to understand the confusion in which the Italy from the evening of September 25 and her victory Georgia Meloni in the elections, with the far right coming to power for the first time since World War II and citizens wondering what will happen next and whether this development can make the rich Italian north or the poor south smile.

This, of course, is a question that always has the same answer, if one looks at the matter extremely simply or simplistically: “The rich come out victorious.” And if it happens like that now, it certainly won’t be a surprise. Even before September 25, 2022, after all, the Italian south was wronged in relation to the north. Even with the previous government and a serious indication of this was how the distribution of the… packages for the PNRR was done.

The question, however, is what the numbers will show from now on. What will be the attitude of the new government, if this election result will be better for the south or the north.

During the pre-election period, Meloni herself winked at the south stating the following: “The National Recovery Plan and its numbers are not a panacea. The south can be given more than the 40% that is already foreseen”. Nevertheless, in the program of Fratelli d’Italia it did not seem that the south is the absolute priority.

There are quite a few in the Italian press who think so that the north will once again be the one to gain the most. Maybe because the north was the one that gave the victory to Meloni, or anyway the possibility for the Right to form a government.

Matteo Salvini’s League in particular have been supported almost exclusively from there, so he should pay them back. As for his Forza Italia Silvio Berlusconi, the biggest support came from industrialists and entrepreneurs, so everyone understands what will be – once again – their priority.

Meloni’s “I’m not a southerner but a patriot” is also not so optimistic for the south. The Italian economy, after all, rests mainly in the north, so a plan to recover or take off, as Fratelli d’Italia’s ambitious plan says, means that businesses in the north should be strengthened or taken off first. As Gianni Agnelli once said, “what is good for FIAT is also good for Italy”…
