Who was the 31-year-old rapper murdered in Mexico

The death of Juan Carlos Sauceda 31 years old, known as “Lefty SM”, in the middle of his musical career, surprised Mexico on Sunday (3).

He died in a hospital after being shot at his home in Zapopan, in the Guadalajara metropolitan area, officials said.

On the 25th of August, he had successfully relaunched the single “Por mi Mexico” on YouTube, in which he invited Santa Fe Klan, Dharius, C-Kan, MC Davo and Neto Peña to collaborate; some of the most recognized rap and hip hop musicians in the country today.

The single had more than 9 million views on YouTube this Monday (4).

Just two days after the launch, the artist highlighted on his Instagram account that he already had a million views and that he was number one in trends on that social network.

In the lyrics of “Por mi México”, Lefty SM reflects, as in several of his compositions, his concern with young people who grow up in disadvantaged environments and with Mexicans who immigrate to the United States in search of better opportunities.

His label, Alzada, recognizes these lyrics as “hymns representative of Mexican culture”.

On August 3, he also released his remix of “Ingrata” on YouTube, with which he ventured into cumbia thanks to his collaboration with Cañaveral, a longtime group and success in tropical rhythms.

From mechanic and welder to star

Sauceda was born on April 22, 1992 in San Luis Río Colorado, in the Mexican state of Sonora, on the border with the United States, according to a biography published on his social networks.

In several interviews, he said that, as a child, he learned the trade of mechanics in his father’s workshop while listening to regional Mexican music, mainly corridos, a genre in which he also ventured with established figures such as El Komander, Enigma Norteño, La Trakalosa, Carin León and Virlán García, among others.

“Before listening to rap, I listened to corridos, and I liked it so much that I got attached to wanting to collaborate”, he recently told the website Soy Grupero.

In the same interview, he said that he started to work in music as a hobby and that his trajectory in rap is marked by his childhood and adolescence in a modest neighborhood of San Luis Río Colorado.

“I feel proud because I come from a neighborhood and I feel that music is made by my neighborhood band, because I feel that there is also talent in the neighborhood, there are people with dreams and that they should be recognized”, he added.

Previously, in an interview with the website HitBoy Music, dedicated to rap, he said that he had to work as a welder, making ironwork in a construction company to finance his travels and the incursion into Alzada, an independent record label located in Guadalajara, Jalisco ― western Mexico ―, which is also a studio specializing in urban rhythms, where the rapper recorded some of his hits.

Although he was born in Sonora, his career began to consolidate in Guadalajara, where he lived with his wife and two daughters.

It was at his home in Guadalajara where, according to authorities, he was murdered on Sunday after being shot. State authorities are investigating the homicide.

Condolences for the rapper’s death came from across the music scene, while his social media followers left messages of disbelief and pain.
