Who was Gil Brother Away, ex-Hermes and Renato who died after fighting cancer

Comedian Jaime Gil da Costa, better known as Gil Brother Away, died this Monday (4), at the age of 66, in Rio de Janeiro. The information was confirmed by the artist’s official profile. The comedian had been hospitalized since May 2023, when he suffered a stroke. Since then, he had been battling a series of health problems, including two cancers, one in his prostate and the other in his bladder.

Artist’s trajectory

Gil, who appeared on several television programs, became known nationally in the 2000s when he was part of the cast of the program Hermes e Renato, on the now extinct MTV Brasil. The comedian worked for six years on the TV channel alongside Fausto Fanti, Bruno Sutter, Felipe Torres, Adriano Pereira and Marco Alves.

The group’s name came from the first two characters performed by the comedians, Hermes, played by Marco Antônio, and Renato, played by Fausto, now deceased.

The group still exists today and has more than 450 thousand followers on Instagram. The profile paid tribute to the former member.

“Gil Brother was a force of nature on the streets. Everything about him was visceral and genuine. Including his acidic and critical way of seeing life. We discovered over time that he had a very in-depth knowledge on practically all subjects. No wonder, he was the first vlogger in Brazil, long before YouTube, with his Away News”.

Gil Brother Away separated itself from the others when it left MTV. In a TV interview in 2017, the comedian said that he no longer had contact with the members of the group. “There is nothing else, no. They came here (TV program), and no one said “hail” to me”.

Personal life

Gil was born in Petrópolis, in the mountainous region of Rio de Janeiro, and carried the name of the hometown he visited. He was also known as “The Away from Petrópolis”.

On an Instagram account, Gil had more than 87 thousand followers and shared his personal life, as well as humor videos, with those who followed him.

On YouTube, he maintained a channel titled “TheBrothers”, with almost 900 thousand subscribers. The most watched video was a “review” of memes, with almost 1 and a half million views.

The channel’s oldest video was posted in June 2015. The last was posted in November 2021.

In the 2017 interview, Gil talks about his personal preferences. According to the comedian, his favorite dish was “rice, beans, cabbage and a little piece of meat”. The favorite drink was orange juice and lemon juice, “I don’t drink (alcoholic drinks), no”.

Gil’s nephew, Willian Passos, managed the comedian’s networks and was the one who broke the news of his death to his followers. In a post, he says that Gil took care of his seven brothers. “When we nephews were born, he took on the responsibility of helping to raise us and, with his “away” way, he made it work.”

In August, the nephew opened a fundraising campaign so fans could help with the comedian’s treatment.
