Drenched in glitter after a protester climbed on stage before the speech Keir Starmer At the Labour Party conference in Liverpool, the Labour leader had only to be thankful that it was him and not his wife: “My wife’s dress is really beautiful,” he explained.
And so it was. Lady Victoria Starmer had been shown to us moments earlier, joining her husband on stage in a stunning red dress by Canadian-British designer Edeline Lee, which might have been overshadowed by the glitter of the protest.
Lady Victoria Starmer never fails to wave the Labour’s red flag sartorially (having worn the shade to three consecutive conferences), but these annual gatherings are often the only glimpse of the typically reclusive wife of Labour leader Sir Keir Starmer. After Akshata Murty’s surprise appearance a week earlier at the Conservative Party conference in Manchester, it might have been a “battle of the First Ladies”, but not so for the elusive Lady Starmer.
To the question of the Sunday Mirror on whether his wife would introduce him before his speech, Keir Starmer responded: “I don’t think I would put her in any difficulty… I talk to her about what we’re going to say and how we’re going to say it. And she has opinions about all of that. But that’s the normal back and forth in a family.”
Nevertheless, Lady Starmer was by her husband’s side this week, pictured in an equally casual look in a red jumper and skinny jeans, as the pair gazed wistfully at Liverpool docks. The woman who could soon become Westminster’s First Lady is rarely seen, so what do we know about her?

They met as lawyers in the 1990s, after Lady Starmer drafted documents for a case Starmer was working on – which led to a successful date at the Lord Stanley pub on Camden Park Road and the rest, as they say, is history. Today Lady Starmer works in occupational health for the NHS.

Not much is known about the couple, but they are known to live with their two children, Toby, 13, and Victoria, 11, in a £1.75million home in Camden, north London.

Dan Kitwood/Getty ImagesAlthough Starmer is very private about his private life – hence his reticence to publicly name his daughter – we know that his wife, originally from Poland, is Jewish and that the couple’s children are being raised in the Jewish faith. Speaking to Jewish Chronicle In March 2021, the Labour leader opened up about his wife’s faith, saying: “As you probably know, my wife’s family is Jewish. On her father’s side, there are bar mitzvahs, synagogues – there are all the traditions.”
He also spoke about the tradition of Friday night dinner, which sees his wife’s family invited to their Camden home for dinner, saying: “It’s about being with the family. It’s about being a bit more disciplined, being at home with our kids and family – they’re growing fast.”

If he ever gets into Downing Street, she’ll have her own life. She won’t be in the limelight like Cherie Blair, but more of a background figure like Sarah Brown. They have a great dynamic: she spends a lot of time teasing him because he can be so serious. I’ve never seen her as particularly political, she’s always had her own interests.”
