Who is Pope Francis’ friend who broke protocol at the wake

Franco-Argentina nun, Genevieve Jeanningros, 81, drew attention by stopping next to Pope Francis’ coffin at the beginning of the funeral in St. Peter’s Basilica on Wednesday (23).

During the ceremony at the beginning of the funeral, chaired by Camerlengo Kevin Farrell, the cardinals and other clerics organized themselves in line to reverence the coffin. That was when a security guard helped the nun to approach his body, passing by the line and spending a few minutes watching Francisco’s body as he cried.

The act was considered a breach of protocol, as theoretically it would be a moment previously reserved for cardinals, bishops and priests.

Jeanningros is known for his work with the LGBTQIA+ community and received the pontiff on visits to the coastal city of ostia several times.

According to the Vatican, the nun is part of the fraternity of the sisters of Jesus and has lived for 56 years amid LGBTQIA+communities.

Their friendship began shortly after Francis’ election, when the nun wrote to him telling the story of her missionary aunt Léonie Duquet, who disappeared in Argentina during the military regime. Since then, they have not stopped corresponding.
