Who is Adolfo Sachsida, the new Minister of Mines and Energy

President Jair Bolsonaro (PL) changed the command of the Ministry of Mines and Energy this Wednesday (11), replacing Bento Albuquerque with Adolfo Sachsida, who takes office from now on, following publication of the Official Gazette.

Sachsida, who served as head of the special advisory for Economic Affairs at the Ministry of Economy, was previously Secretary of Economic Policy between January 2019 and February 2022 in the portfolio headed by Paulo Guedes.

Graduated in Law with a master’s degree and a doctorate in economics from the University of Brasília (UnB), the new minister is trained especially in macroeconomics, with an emphasis on econometric models — an area dedicated to the study of future economic trends. In the academic field, he also held a postdoctoral degree at the University of Alabama, in the United States.

Sachsida has worked as a professor at Brazilian universities, such as the Catholic University of Brasília, and abroad, such as the University of Texas, also in the USA. He currently teaches undergraduate and master’s courses in Economics at the Brazilian Institute of Teaching, Development and Research (IDP).

Within the government, Sachsida defended the reform agenda of Minister Paulo Guedes, such as the privatization of Eletrobras and the preparation of a tax reform proposal, which did not advance in the Legislature.

On April 22, Bento Albuquerque had stated that the capitalization of Eletrobras would come out by July — a response to a suspension by the Federal Audit Court (TCU) in relation to the second stage of privatization of the state-owned company.

command change

In a statement sent to CNN after confirming the change of command of the portfolio, Adolfo Sachsida said that he is facing the biggest professional challenge of his career and did not want to go into details about the departure of Bento Albuquerque.

“I thank President Jair Bolsonaro for his trust, Minister Paulo Guedes for the support of more than 3 years in the Ministry of Economy and I ask for God’s grace to be at the forefront of this challenge that is the biggest of my professional career. I also thank Minister Bento Albuquerque for the work carried out so far”, said Sachsida on his first day as a minister.

The Ministry of Mines and Energy has been cited by Bolsonaro when it comes to Petrobras. In a live on social media last Thursday (5), Bolsonaro quoted the now ex-minister Bento Albuquerque when complaining about the profit recorded by Petrobras in the first quarter of this year.

“You cannot, Minister Bento Albuquerque and Mr. José Mauro, from Petrobras, you cannot increase the price of diesel. I’m not appealing, I’m making a statement taking into account the abusive profit you guys have. You cannot break Brazil”, declared the president.

The Brazilian state-owned company recorded a net profit of R$ 44.5 billion in the first three months of 2022. The result represents a jump in profitability of more than 3,000% compared to the same quarter of 2021.
