WHO closes agreement to face future pandemics after years of negotiations

The World Health Organization (WHO) countries have reached an agreement to prepare the world for future pandemics after more than three years of negotiations, WHO said on Wednesday morning (16) at the local time.

The legally binding pact aims to reinforce world defenses against new pathogens after the Covid-19 pandemic killed millions of people between 2020 and 2022.

“After more than three years of intensive negotiations, WHO Member States took a big step forward in their efforts to make the world safer against pandemics,” the organization said in a statement.

The proposal describes measures to prevent future pandemics and global collaboration in outbreak responses.

The deal is widely seen as a victory for the global health agency, at a time when multilateral organizations such as WHO have been affected by drastic cuts in US external financing.

“This is a historic agreement for health security, equity and international solidarity,” said the French ambassador to global health, Anne-Claire amprou in the statement.

The proposal will be considered at the World Health Assembly Policy Meeting in May, WHO said.
