White House says it will “closely” monitor agreement with Hamas

The Biden administration will monitor the implementation of the agreement reached between Israel and Hamas, National Security Council spokesman John Kirby said on Wednesday (22).

“No one is beating around the bush here. Now is the time for everyone to take a closer look, because it all comes down to implementation and execution [do acordo],” Kirby said in a virtual briefing for the American Jewish community.

Kirby said the government will be watching “very closely” to ensure that Hamas lives up to its side of the hostage agreement.

The counselor also offered some explanations about the American hostages, explaining that there are 10 United States citizens missing and that they are currently believed to be being held captive.

“We know there are 10 Americans missing – we don’t know if they are all hostages, but that’s the assumption we’re making. So, somewhere in that region,” he said.

Three Americans would be women and children, a category that is part of the release agreement, and the United States is optimistic that the three “will be in at least one of the groups.”

But Kirby expressed caution: “We’re going to have to stay vigilant – the truth is we won’t know for sure until we start to see people moving.”

Pressed by CNN’s Bianna Golodryga about whether there is proof that all the hostages are still alive, Kirby deflected.

“Our information is limited on all hostages, including the Americans. Therefore, I cannot say for sure that we have proof of life for all of them. But I can say that we have no indication otherwise. So we will continue to work on this as much as we can.”
