White House hopes to contain tensions with China over Pelosi’s Taiwan visit

The US government wants to prevent tensions between Washington and Beijing, ignited by US House Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s visit to Taiwan, from escalating into a conflict, said White House national security spokesman John Kirby, this Tuesday (2).

At a news conference, Kirby mentioned that the Speaker of the House had the right to visit the island, but also stressed that the visit does not represent a violation of Chinese sovereignty or long-standing US policy.

“What we don’t want to see is that it spills over into any kind of crisis or conflict. There’s just no reason to amplify it,” she stated.

Pelosi arrived in Taiwan on Tuesday on a trip she said showed an unshakable American commitment to the self-governing island claimed by the Chinese.

China, on the other hand, condemned the highest-ranking US visit in 25 years as a threat to peace and stability in the Taiwan Strait.

Chinese warplanes flew over the cross-strait line before their arrival, and the Chinese army announced joint air and land exercises near Taiwan, starting Tuesday night, and tests of conventional missiles at sea east of Taiwan. island.

The Chinese state news agency Xinhua described live ammunition exercises and other activities near Taiwan scheduled for Thursday (4) and Sunday (7).

Kirby also said the US will continue to operate in the seas and skies of the Western Pacific.
