When Pope Francis arrived in Lesvos in the midst of a refugee crisis – “Who cried for these people?”

It was a spring day, almost a decade ago, when an Airbus A320 took off from Mytilene Airport in Lesvos. A small group of attendees, including officials and journalists, watched distilled until the aircraft turned to the left over the Aegean and Alitalia’s inscription was lost on the horizon. Inside, there was Pope Francis, who had stayed in Lesvos for less than five hours, on an island then at the center of the refugee crisis in the eastern gates of Europe. According to the Guardian, his lightning visit was full of symbols, but what made the biggest surprise was his passengers.
