Of movie stars we tend to only see the more glamorous side: the red carpets, the mega parties, the holidays in dream hotels, the mind-boggling fees. But the behind the scenes of their lives isn't always all sunshine and roses. See the case of Nicole Kidman. As her career reached one of its highest peaks, the actress, 56, was going through one of her most difficult periods emotionally.
When Nicole Kidman won her first Oscar in 2003 for playing Virginia Woolf in the acclaimed film The Hoursit was fresh from divorce from Tom Cruise, definitively putting an end to 11 years of marriage.
«Chaos reigned in my personal life, yet my professional life was going swimmingly»Nicole Kidman told Dave Karger, author of the new book 50 Oscar Nights (launching January 23). “It happens often, doesn't it?”
At the end of the Oscars, all Nicole Kidman wanted to do was hole up at home and be alone. But friends and colleagues encouraged her to take part in the Vanity Fair party. «Everyone told me: “You absolutely have to come. You must come and hold the statuette in your hands.” It didn't seem like a great idea to me, I felt like I was getting away with it by doing this, of needlessly showing off”, says Nicole Kidman in her autobiography. In the end, although reluctant, she took part in the Vanity Fair party, holding the Oscar award in her hand.
«But the truth is, I felt completely overwhelmed, embarrassed, shaky, and I didn't enjoy anything about the party. I felt out of place.” After this attempt, Nicole Kidman is back in her hotel room, dealing with loneliness and with the need to find love again.
«I ordered takeout and ate my dinner on the floor of the Beverly Hills Hotel. I sat down and ate fries and a burger, then went to bed. That's when I felt the pinch. I felt that all I needed was to find love again. “I need a love in my life,” I told myself. After crying, I went to bed alone. It wasn't even past midnight. If I ever won an Oscar again, I'm telling you, I would celebrate for at least 24 hours, staying out all night.”
The rest is history: on January 15, 2005 Nicole Kidman met singer Keith Urban at the G'Day USA event. Four months later they started dating, in 2006 they got married and today they are as in love as on the first day.
