What Samantha Cristoforetti will do on the international space station

After the first few days of adaptation Samantha Cristoforetti begins his work on the International Space Station. During the flight with the Crew Dragon Freedom capsule, the Italian astronaut of the European Space Agency held the role of mission specialist. Now Minerva, the second mission of AstroSamantha which in 2014 had remained 200 days on the ISS.

For the duration of Minerva (the return is expected in September) the Italian astronaut will be the leader of the American orbital segment, Usos, all the US, European and Canadian modules and components of the International Space Station.

David ParkerESA’s director of human and robotic exploration, explained: “Cristoforetti will continue to be an excellent representative of Europe over the next few months, which will be rich in science, research and operations on the International Space Station, which we look forward to with great enthusiasm”.

The mission Minerva it involves experiments in various fields of science including medicine and nutrition. The metabolism of astronauts is studied to better manage future long-term stays and also possible human settlements off Earth.

Asi Prometheus is the project of the Italian Space Agency on the consequences of oxidative stress on astronauts. Ovospace is the project that investigates the role of microgravity on the maturation and development of ovarian cells.

There is also an extremely Italian project. Evoo will study how extra virgin olive oil responds to the microgravity and radiation of the space environment. Esa suture space instead, it studies the wound healing process in conditions of microgravity.

Samantha Cristoforetti started experiments in 2019 which will continue. Acoustic diagnostics investigates the effects on hearing of conditions in space. Nutris instead it tries to understand how to maintain a good level of body composition between lean mass and fat mass with microgravity on the astronauts’ physique.
