“This is us” fans may or may not like the “Paradise” series, which has just arrived at the Disney+streaming, but there is something common in both works: Dan Fogelman. After creating the story about the Pearson family, he now risks a thriller full of secrets around those who killed the president of the United States.
In an interview with CNN Sterling K. Brown, who is in the cast of both works, parallened them. In “This Is Us,” his character Randall and his wife, Beth, play a game called “Worst Case Scenario,” where they imagine the worst possible situations that can happen. For him, “paradise” is like this game.
“Dan thought: ‘I will make a series based on scenarios of worst cases’”The actor summarized.

In the series, President Cal says the world is 19 times more screwed than anyone realizes. How does this phrase resonate to you?
James Marsden: I try not to be so cynical in life. And I have a lot of hope in the human spirit and what we can achieve and do. I know that sometimes it looks like things are not going well, you know? But I have hope, and I see good and what can come from it. But yes, the series definitely explores the “and if” in the future and the direction we are taking.
Julianne Nicholson: I agree. I think it’s almost like trying to stay hopeful and positive, finding joys in our lives and also looking out and seeing where we can fight a good fight, either in your community or taking care of the planet. There is much to be done, but I think the main point is to stay positive, hopeful and light, sharing it with the people you find throughout the day. Because the opposite does not work.
Sterling K. Brown: Yes, I feel that nowadays there is no objective experience of reality, especially today with each one having their own individual algorithm, feeding what they already want to see. You tend to find in this world what you are looking for. And if you are in the dark looking for more darkness, that’s what you will find. And if you are in the light looking for more light, you will find it too. And I think dan [Fogelman] He is a very interesting person, because he spends a lot of time contemplating the worst possible scenarios. I know this because in “this is us” we played a game with that name, where we just talked about the worst things that could happen in life. And I think now he did it with “paradise.” He thought, “I’m going to make a series based on scenarios of worst cases.” But even in the middle of it, light is present. You need to believe that there is something worth living or fighting. Otherwise, what is the alternative?
Brazilian actress Fernanda Torres once said that art can resist throughout life even at the most difficult times. Do you see “paradise” as a work of art designed to provoke reflection? And what do you expect the public to watch?
James Marsden: I hope it is a positive experience for them. I don’t think anyone does this job or any other to depress someone. I feel that we find comfort when experiencing fictional situations, putting human beings in these scenarios in the series, and it’s as if you could try what it would be like to be in that situation, seeing it through their eyes. And that’s what the drama comes. If everything were just flowers, we wouldn’t have to try it out what mourning is like, how to overcome it, or the loss of a child, or the loss of a relationship. And sometimes it takes extreme circumstances to bring these things out very intensely. And I think that’s what you see in the three characters in this series, which are in this position.
Julianne Nicholson: I think one of Dan’s superpowers is to illuminate human experience, but in all its fullness of mourning, joy, loyalty, distrust, anger, and yet make it fun. And art can be fun. Art can take us out of our own lives for a moment. It can be, know that only that, to move us away from our own lives for a minute. It can also be recognizing something in one of these characters you feel like being similar to yourself. Recognizing yourself in art is another beautiful thing.
Sterling K. Brown: I think often in human experience, when you are going through something traumatic or painful, the feeling is that no one knows what that means. And then you read a book, you see a movie or series that illuminates the fact that other people are going through something you went through. And this pain, this experience, becomes something shared. You feel less alone and this really makes it a little easier to move on.
