What is known about the death of Pope Francis and the next steps

Pope Francis died at the age of 88 this Monday (21). The death of the pontiff was announced by Cardinal Kevin Farrell, Vatican’s Camerlengo.

Tributes are occurring around the world after Francis’ death. The Pope last appeared giving Easter blessing on Sunday (20).

Cause of death

The Pope died of a stroke followed by heart failure, the Vatican press office said in a statement.

Francisco’s death was also affected by other diseases, including an “previous episode of acute respiratory failure”, high blood pressure and type II diabetes, according to the statement, signed by the director of the Vatican City State Health and Hygiene, Andrea Arcangeli.

ORDERS ABOUT THE BURGE

Francisco declared in his will, released by the Vatican, that he wanted to be buried in a “simple” tomb in the ground of the Basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore in Rome. Francis said that the tomb should have an inscription of a word – Franciscus, his name in Latin.

He will be the first Pope over a century to be buried outside the Vatican. Francisco stated in his will that he argued that an unidentified benefactor covered the expenses of his burial.

Thirds and prayers

One third was prayed in honor of Francisco in São Pedro Square, in Vatican City, on Monday night, local time.

The prayer was led by Cardinal Mauro Gambetti, Arcipresis of the St. Peter’s Basilica, in front of hundreds of people inside and around the square.

The Assembly of the First Nations, a defense organization that represents indigenous communities in Canada, expressed sadness for the death of Francis. The organization stated that Francisco apologized for abuse in Catholic schools.
