Set in a dystopian world, where the United States is experiencing a civil war, Kirsten Dunst (“Spider-Man” and “Marie Antoinette”) and Wagner Moura (“Elite Squad” and “Narcos”) play two journalists from the Reuters news agency . Dunst is a photojournalist and Moura, a reporter.
In the midst of the land conflict, which is shown by the director Alex Garland (“Ex_Machina: Artificial Instinct” and “Annihilation”) as a constant danger, the protagonists embark on a journey to reach Washington DC with the aim of getting a scoop with the President – before the opposition reaches the capital and overthrows him from power .
Two other characters join the protagonists on this journey: Sammy (Stephen Henderson), a journalist for The New York Times and a longtime friend of the duo, and young Jesse (Cailee Spaeny), who aspires to be a war photojournalist.
They make the trip by car and, along the way, they see the horrors of war, becoming hostages of it. The management seeks to give emphasis on violence, highlighting the records made by photojournalists .
Moura, who is often used as comic relief in the plot, stars in one of the most impactful scenes in the film – which he revealed left him destroyed. The scene in question portrays the nationalist look of an American soldier, who makes a distinction between “types of Americans”.
You political positions are not clear throughout the plot but awakens a ethical discussion about photojournalism and covering a war .
“We record so that others can question” says Dunst's character when Jesse asks about how she reacts to the atrocities of war when she is photographing.
The film also highlights how the press can lose its role amid conflicts . Even at times when journalists wear vests marked “press”, which is also marked in the car, they are subject to being attacked.
“Civil war” manages to bring a rollercoaster of emotions, with shootings and explosions in every act of the film, and ends by leaving a series of questions about society and the future.
