The filmmaker Luca Guagagnino will adapt the book “American psychopath” (1991), by Beat Easton Ellis, for theaters. It will be the second time the story will be told on the big screen. The first version was released in 2000 with Christian Bale’s emblematic performance as Patrick Bateman.
The Hollywood Reporter sought out members of the original film team and questioned their opinion about the remake. See below what they said.
The actor and director Matt Ross who plays one of the protagonist’s co -workers in the plot, highlighted Bale’s work and cited the challenge that the new team will face with the new version.
“On the one hand, I am always sad about remakes. Personally, they have offered me to drive remakes in the past, and I was always very hesitant to accept because it always seems only mercenary capitalism and nothing more,” he said;
“This still seems to me more about a commercial venture than anything else but being based on a book, there may be multiple interpretations, so why not? I think they will have a lot of work ahead, for no reason other than Christian’s exceptional performance “He explained.
Already Chris Hanley one of the producers of the 2000 film, believes that Luca Guadagnino can do a good job with the adaptation.
“Everyone is calling me, like, how stupidity [Psicopate Americano]’. I don’t think so. Luca is a great director. He never made a bad movie, ”he argued.
The Oscar nominated actor Austin Butler It is quoted to take over Patrick Bateman. Kerry Barden lineup director of “American psychopath” (2000), however, believes he should play Paul Allen, a supporting character.
“I would climb Austin for Jared’s role [Leto] Because he’s so handsome, and that’s why we climb Jared, because he’s so handsome. Jared is certainly also a great actor and obviously Austin also has a lot of depth as an actor. But not everyone has this kind of beauty, ”he said.
Alessandro Camon, one of the producers of the original movie, talked about how a remake can motivate an actor.
“It’s a big challenge when someone redoes an iconic movie or takes on an iconic role. But sometimes, for actors, this is also exciting. Of course, Laurence Olivier is Hamlet, but it’s not ‘how can I be better than Laurence Olivier?’ It’s about ‘how do I find my own Hamlet?’ ”He said.
