What do the Chinese want to discover with this radio telescope?

China’s Five Hundred Meter Aperture Spherical Radio Telescope (FAST) has discovered evidence of the existence of nanohertz gravitational waves.

According to the researchers, the discovery is important for solving problems in contemporary astrophysics, such as supermassive black holes, the history of galaxy mergers and the formation of large-scale structures in the universe.

The research was carried out by scientists from the National Astronomical Observatory of the Chinese Academy of Sciences (NAOC), and published last Thursday (28) in the journal “Research in Astronomy and Astrophysics”.

According to the publication, the findings help to understand the formation of structures in the universe and to investigate the growth, evolution and mergers of the most massive celestial objects in the universe.

Li Kejia, a researcher at NAOC and professor at Peking University, said that detecting nanohertz gravitational waves is very challenging due to their extremely low frequency, long periods and wavelengths of light years.
