What can we do for the coming and the remaining Afghans

In Settimo Torinese, where 94 people were welcomed, including 42 children from Afghanistan, the citizens brought much more than what was needed to the Fenoglio Center managed by Red Cross: toys, clothes, food and other basic necessities. The Municipality and the Red Cross thanked for what has been done for the Afghans, but also added: “Currently, the guests of the Fenoglio Center are well and the CRI has given adequate answers to every need”.

The request was another.

“The regional operations room has issued a request for personnel volunteer in support of operators “. Volunteers are used to manage the quarantine period that the group has to do inside the center. Then they will have to find a place through local bodies and associations.

The collection of rompers, powdered milk, nappies, baby food, strollers, clothes also for older children and adults and chargers remains open for subsequent groups on arrival. Collections similar should open in other areas of Italy where refugees will be hosted.

For those arriving in Italy, not much else can be done. For those who remain in Afghanistan, the only concrete way seems to be that of supporting non-governmental organizations that have remained in the country. Emergency and Doctors Without Borders have their hospitals active in the capital and in other provinces. The United Nations Agency for i Refugees has launched a specific donation campaign for Afghanistan. Unicef did the same. In Kabul there is also the International Red Cross. Among the associations that are dealing in particular with women are Pangea Onlus, Nove Onlus and Cisda, the Italian Coordination of Support for Afghan Women.

“The priority remains to give a voice to the democratic forces that we fully support,” writes the Cisda, «For now we can only renew our call to support the campaign that CISDA has launched for a fundraiser for the organizations and movements with which we have been collaborating for years. For those who have made themselves available to welcome people who have to leave the country, we invite you to wait for the decisions of national and international institutions regarding the launch of humanitarian corridors “.

The priority is to get as many Afghans out of the country as possible, but it is very difficult to reach the airport and the time limits are tight. The Taliban reiterated that they will react if the US stays after August 31st. There are several online petitions asking that humanitarian corridors and air bridges remain open for a long time.
