What are the risks of new variants like Deltacron for the control of Covid-19

Researchers in Brazil have been investigating since the beginning of this week the first suspected cases in the country of Deltacron, a new strain of the coronavirus that combines elements of the Delta and Ômicron variants. The presence of the new mutation has already been confirmed in some places in Europe, including France and the United Kingdom, and has been monitored by the World Health Organization (WHO).

The new variant is still associated with a small number of Covid-19 cases around the world, and more research is needed to determine Deltacron’s impact on fighting the pandemic. But the emergence of the mutation coincides with a significant increase in new infections in Asia, especially China, and in much of the European Union.

In this episode of E Tem Mais, Carol Nogueira presents a balance of doubts about the emergence of Deltacron. To indicate to what extent the new variants of the coronavirus and the increase in cases of Covid-19 in some regions of the world represent a risk for the control of the pandemic in Brazil, the epidemiologist Jesem Orellana, from Fiocruz-AM, and the infectious disease physician Melissa Valentini.
