What are the reasons and possible impacts of Bolsonaro’s visit to Russia

President Jair Bolsonaro embarked on Monday night (14) for a visit to Russia at a time of heightened tension in the Russian border region with Ukraine. The travel agenda includes a meeting between Bolsonaro and Russian President Vladimir Putin, a visit to the Russian Parliament and a conversation with local businessmen, as well as a ministerial meeting on military technical cooperation.

But the commitments coincide with the growing threat of a Russian invasion of Ukraine, in a possible move aimed at fending off NATO’s presence in Eastern Europe and the influence of the United States and other Western powers in the region. Despite receiving advice to postpone the trip, Bolsonaro decided to keep the visit.
