Weekly Consumer Price Index closes 2021 up 9.34%, says FGV

Brazil ended 2021 with a 0.57% increase in inflation in the last quadrisweek of December, according to the Weekly Consumer Price Index (IPC-S), released this Monday (3), by the Brazilian Institute of Economics Fundação Getúlio Vargas (FGV IBRE).

As a result, the variation in prices in the country accumulated an increase of 9.34% in the year.

From the third to the fourth week of the month, five of the eight classes of expenses showed a slowdown. The biggest impact came from the transport group (1.08% to 0.28%).

In this segment, the highlight was the behavior of the price of gasoline, which showed a reduction in prices. The fuel ranged from 1.77%, registered in the previous survey, to –0.36%.

The education, reading and recreation sectors (1.80% to 0.56%); housing (1.15% to 1.10%); communication (0.05% to -0.08%) and miscellaneous expenses (0.12% to 0.11%) also decreased in the last period analyzed.

Among these classes, the main highlights were airfare (9.94% to 2.84%), residential electricity tariff (3.23% to 3.06%), internet monthly fee (-0.03% to – 0.33%) and pet food (0.88% to 0.73%).

On the other hand, three groups registered an increase in variation. They are: food (0.59% to 0.72%), clothing (0.78% to 0.97%) and health and personal care (0.17% to 0.21%.

The items with the highest increases were fruits (7.17% to 9.34%), women’s shoes (0.39% to 1.13%) and hygiene and personal care articles (0.08% to 0.27%) .

The IPC-S rate takes into account the cost of living for Brazilian families that receive between one and 33 minimum monthly wages. To measure it, the study calculates the average of prices collected over the four weeks prior to closing the survey.
