In an interview with CNN this Wednesday (16), former Minister of Foreign Affairs Celso Amorim said that members of the transition group for the government of President-elect Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT) would like there to be a candidacy of “Latin American consensus” for the presidency of the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB).
Amorim said that the name of Ilan Goldfajn was presented “without consultation and discussion” and, thus, does not understand that it is necessary for Lula to support the candidacy.
“At that point, what we would like is for there to be a Latin American consensus candidacy. Even to restore the BID. If Ilan [Goldfajn] win, won. And we will deal with it. And he will deal with us. I don’t see a problem with that, if he is a person, which I believe he is, with a republican vision”, he highlighted.
He also commented on the profile of a new Minister of Foreign Affairs, pointing out that “someone with a political career could fit into the portfolio. At the same time, he warned that “it is necessary to heal Itamaraty”, as the ministry would have been “very injured in the Bolsonaro administration”.
Still on the subject of the international community, Amorim commented on the war in Ukraine, emphasizing that “peace is urgent”, requiring, for that, negotiations and dialogue.
“And it’s not just Zelensky with Putin, because that’s something that interests the whole world. So you have to have the United States, you have to have China, you have to have other countries in Europe that can collaborate. And if, in the midst of this process, all of Brazil can help, President Lula will not be at a loss. As one of the actors, ”he said.
Regarding COP27 and the participation of the president-elect in the Conference, the former minister stated that the climate is a central issue for the survival of humanity, and that Lula “is a person who has leadership, very great world political stature”.
