“We want justice”, says grandmother of child forgotten in van

The family of two-year-old boy Apollo Rodrigues, who died after being forgotten in a school van in the north of São Paulo, considers the fact that the child was left in the vehicle to be an act of irresponsibility.

The boy’s grandmother, Luzinete Rodrigues dos Santos, says she was only informed about the problem with her grandson after being notified by the hospital where Apollo was taken. “They were not at fault, but it was irresponsible.”

Still in front of the police station where the case was registered, the grandmother also talks about the carelessness that caused the child’s death. “He left the station wagon in the parking lot, in terrible heat like today. I only realized it when it was time to hand over the children.”

The grandmother was still surprised by the fact that she had not received any communication from the school about the absence of her grandson, who was left with the van service, but was not delivered to the daycare center. According to her, it was common practice for the school and family to maintain contact when the child was not going to school. “The coordinator always asked when he wasn’t going. And I always warned you too. I don’t know why they didn’t ask this time.”

Apollo started going to Caminhar é Preciso I daycare this year, after his mother got a job, according to his grandmother. He used a school van linked to the Free School Transport (TEG) service from São Paulo City Hall.

In a statement, the city hall informed that the vehicle has already been disqualified from Free School Transport and an administrative process has been opened to investigate the facts. Read the note in full:

“The City of São Paulo, through the Municipal Department of Education (SME), deeply regrets what happened and provides all necessary support to the family members. The Regional Directorate of Education (DRE) is monitoring the case and the Support and Monitoring Center for Learning (NAAPA), made up of psychologists and educational psychologists, was called to assist the family. A police report was registered and the Regional Education Directorate (DRE) is available to the competent authorities to assist in the investigation. The Free School Transport (TEG) driver has already been disqualified and an administrative process has been opened to investigate the facts.”
