The Minister of the Environment, Marina Silva, said, in an interview with CNN this Thursday (23), that “we must recognize the effects of climate change”. She evaluated the tragedy on the coast of São Paulo that killed 48 people so far.
“We have to recognize that we are living under the effects of climate change. This is the new reality that is placed in the world. We must combat disasters in advance,” said the minister.
In Marina Silva’s assessment, it is necessary to create a prevention plan for extreme events like the one seen in São Paulo. She also pointed out the importance of joint work between municipal, state and federal governments.
“We cannot have more deforestation because it increases CO₂ emissions and contributes to the weakening of the soil, increasing the dramatic consequences for people’s lives,” he added.
“It is the poorest people who are most affected by climate change. It is not fair and ethical that the poor are pushed into risk zones”, added Marina Silva.
