In an interview with CNN this Thursday (16), President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT) said he was aware that “we cannot spend more than we earn”.
The president’s speech was in response to the anchor of CNN Daniela Lima in question about the new fiscal framework, which should be presented in March, according to the Minister of Finance, Fernando Haddad, to replace the spending ceiling.
“I am aware, from what Dona Lindu, my illiterate mother, taught me, that we cannot spend more than we earn. We can only spend more than we earn if we take on debt to make an investment that can be profitable, or an investment that brings some benefit to society”, she said.
“That’s what we’re going to handle with great responsibility, because I don’t want to put Brazil in an unpayable debt”.
Next, Lula says that “when talking about fiscal responsibility in a country, what is being said is the following: bankers want to be sure that they will receive their interest every year from the government, that is what they want, first to guarantee the from them. I think they should have a little common sense and first guarantee the people who are starving in the street”.
The “Brazilians need to improve their lives”: “The people want to eat well, want to live well, want to dress well, want to go out, want to take vacations (…) There are millions of people in need”.
CNN anchor Daniela Lima interviewed President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT) directly from the Planalto Palace in Brasília. The entirety of Lula’s first interview with CNN Brasil is available on YouTube, TikTok and Kwai.
