We cannot have a fiscal rule to violate, says Paulo Teixeira about Spending Ceiling

Federal deputy Paulo Teixeira (PT), a member of the transition team of the president-elect, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT), told the CNN it is necessary to create a tax rule that is respected by the state and society.

For Teixeira, the spending cap – the government’s current fiscal anchor created in 2017 during the Michel Temer (MDB) government – is no longer a serious rule in the face of so many violations.

“One issue is that you have tax rules, we cannot give up on that. Now, you can’t have a tax rule that every time you break it, every time you break it. the tax ceiling [de gastos] from 2017 until today it has been violated numerous times, so it is not a rule, it is not serious”, said the deputy to CNN 🇧🇷

Teixeira said it was necessary to modernize the country’s fiscal anchor based on world examples. According to him, the new government will adopt concepts of fiscal balance and public debt reduction.

Last week, Lula’s speech on fiscal responsibility caused the Brazilian stock market to fall and the dollar to rise. For the PT deputy, however, the market “misinterpreted” the president-elect’s speech.
