‘We are not afraid of anyone’: Ukrainians raise flags defying fears of Russian invasion

The Ukrainians today raised the flag of their country and played their national anthem to show unity in the face of fears of a Russian invasion, which according to Western powers is imminent.

The Ukrainian flag was flown outside schools, hospitals and shops to mark “Unity Day”, which was declared a holiday by President Volodymyr Zelensky this week following a rally by Russian troops on the Ukrainian border.

Russia has denied that it would invade Ukraine, but warned that it would provide a “military and technical response” if its Western adversaries did not end its threatening policy.

On Kiev’s main boulevard, Kreskatik, where flags are flown at government offices, today was for many as any other day.

“An ordinary day, but these flags are here for a reason, to show that we are not afraid of anyone. They did not scare us,” said Mikola, owner of a small canteen that sells coffee.

A loudspeaker at a local government office in the capital is playing patriotic songs, while television and government networks on Youtube are broadcasting speeches reminiscent of Ukraine’s independence.

“Everyone wants to scare us and we came to stay,” said Ludmila, a retiree who wears a small Ukrainian-flag pin on the lapel of her coat.

At the Olympic Stadium in Kiev, dozens of people unfurled a 200-meter Ukrainian flag, which they waved to the sounds of patriotic music.

In a televised address, Zelensky said Ukrainians were united in a common desire to “live in peace, happiness, in a family, children with parents.”

“No one can love our country like we do. And only we can protect it,” he said.

Later today, the Ukrainian president is expected to inspect military exercises in Rivne and fly to the eastern Donbass region to meet with soldiers serving there.

Zelensky, who is also an active user of social media, called on Ukrainians to post photos and videos with the Ukrainian flag and add hashtags. On Instagram, users posted using the hashtag #UnityDay.

“Today we have proved that we Ukrainians are a united nation, a united people,” said Pavlo Khorinov, an official at the State Institute for Family and Youth Policy.

Zelensky has long said that while he believes Russia is threatening to attack his country, the possibility of an impending invasion has been overestimated by Western allies in their attempt to respond to Moscow’s attempt to terrorize Ukraine and instill panic.
