Water leaks and heating problems put artworks at risk at the Louvre

The Louvre Museum, the world’s most popular museum, is urgently seeking help from the French government to repair damage and renovate its exhibition spaces to better protect the countless works of art it houses. In a letter to Culture Minister Rashida Dati, revealed by Le Parisien newspaper, museum director Laurence de Carre warned that its facilities are in dire straits, highlighting problems such as water leaks and “alarming temperature fluctuations that endanger the conservation of works of art”. Built at the end of the 12th century, the Louvre Palace was for centuries the official residence of the kings of France, until Louis XIV abandoned it to settle in Versailles. In 1793 it was converted into a museum for the royal art collection. Last year, the Louvre Museum welcomed 8.7 million visitors.
