The motorcade carrying the head of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) was briefly halted by gunfire while returning to territory controlled by the Ukraineafter visiting the nuclear power plant of Zaporizhia, controlled by Russia.
An IAEA spokesman said that “fire was heard in the background for several minutes” but none of the members of the expedition were in danger. The agency “has no other information about the incident,” he added.
Earlier Renat Karchaa, an adviser to the head of Russia’s atomic energy agency Rosenergoatom, accused Ukraine of opening fire on the convoy of IAEA Director General Rafael Grossi. Russia’s Tass news agency reported that no one was injured and the convoy returned safely to the city of Zaporizhia.

My visit to #Zaporizhzhya nuclear power plant is the first after I established the @iaeaorg 5 principles for protecting the plant and avoiding a nuclear accident, which reinforce the essential role of the IAEA Support and Assistance Mission at Zaporizhzhya #ISAMZ. pic.twitter.com/52DUyF7c9n

Chechen fighters were deployed in Belgorod
Chechen fighters were deployed in the Belgorod region, which borders Ukraine, in order to prevent attacks by “Ukrainian sabotage groups”, Chechen leader Ramzan Kadyrov announced.
Last month, authorities in Belgorod reported a series of infiltrations by pro-Ukrainian Russian rebel groups that describe themselves as opponents of President Vladimir Putin.
Kadyrov, one of Putin’s closest allies, said fighters from the Zapat-Akhmat battalion were deployed near the border village of Nekhoteevka and at a checkpoint in the Grayvoron region, where an attack took place in May.
“The residents of the border areas can sleep peacefully… Anyone who trespasses on our borders will receive a swift response”Kadyrov said in a post on the Telegram messaging app.
Ukraine denies any involvement in these attacks, which it considers a consequence of the Russian invasion of its territory in February 2022.
