With the increase in fuels caused by the war in Ukraine, the airline industry is expected to be impacted. According to companies and the industry association, the expectation is that tickets will become more expensive, trips will be postponed and it will be more difficult to include new destinations.
Russia is the biggest supplier of gas and fuel to Europe. With conflict, this supply is compromised – thus increasing demand. In this way, a global crisis is created in the search for fuels, which causes an increase in the price that reaches consumers.
With the rise in prices, the main fuel for aviation: aviation kerosene (QAV) is also more expensive.
According to the Brazilian Association of Airlines (ABEAR), the increase in QAV generates an impact on the resumption of air operations, in addition to making more expensive destinations unfeasible. In addition, the rise in fuel prices should impact cargo transport and the entire tourism production chain.
“Given this scenario”, the organization said, “ABEAR informs that the consequent increase in QAV in the short and medium terms could slow the resumption of air operations, the logistical service to essential services and make routes with higher costs unfeasible, including the focus on expansion of regional markets, in a sector that accumulates a loss of R$ 37.4 billion from 2016 until the third quarter of 2021”.
The association defended that emergency measures to contain prices that include aviation kerosene be taken to try to ease the crisis.
In a note to CNNGOL informed that, given the increase in fuel prices, the increase in the price of airline tickets is “unavoidable”, but it is not yet possible to determine how much this increase will be.
“QAV has been experiencing constant increases in the last three years”, he said, “and at the moment it represents about 50% of the costs of a flight, a percentage well above the historical average. Compared to 2019, the increase is approximately 90% and, in relation to the values of the last quarter of 2021, 30%”.
Latam already informed that some flights that were scheduled for the coming months and the new destinations planned were postponed to the third quarter of this year. According to the company, the action had to be taken because of the high price of jet fuel, a result of the war in Ukraine.
Customers who purchased tickets for Latam flights that were postponed can access the website to reschedule their trip.
