War in Ukraine: Germany grants € 2 billion to federal states for refugees

Two billion euros in the federal states of Germany to cover the financial costs of care, but also the integration of Ukrainians refugees will be made available by the government, as Chancellor Olaf Soltz stated yesterday.

“The agreement is a good basis for our country to have a common position in the long run,” Solz said after meeting with the prime ministers of Germany’s 16 federal states.

Germany has officially registered about 316,000 refugees from Ukraine, according to the country’s federal police. Berlin estimates that more than 60,000 refugees remain in the German capital during this period.

Berlin and the neighboring state of Brandenburg have called for federal support for the housing, care and integration of Ukrainian refugees, according to Reuters and the Athens News Agency.

Yesterday’s announcement became known as the ambassadors of the European Union agreed on impose a fifth package of sanctions on Russia, including a ban on Russian coal importswhile the closure of European ports on Russian ships is also planned.

Solz said the sanctions were “a big step towards further determination”, adding that the sanctions showed that Russian President Vladimir Putin was destroying the future of his own country by invading Ukraine.
