President Donald Trump today intensified attacks on Harvard University, considered the most prestigious in the United States. He threatened to withdraw from the institution of tax exemptions and public funds if it does not undergo political demands from the federal government – among them, the repression of anti -Semitism and the abandonment of programs of equality, diversity and inclusion.
Harvard, however, is just the latest case in a broader offensive. What is observed is a kind of Cultural Revolution promoted by Trump against academic institutions and the elites formed in these spaces, as well as against state bureaucracy, its regulations and even organs such as the defense and intelligence apparatus.
This revolution also includes attempts to influence the way of thinking of private companies. To this point, movement can be understood as a continuation of cultural war, now using government tools. However, the revolution undertaken by Trump seems to go further, endangering the constitutional stability of the United States.
The president has confronted court decisions and even disrespected even the Supreme Court in the case of a deportation considered illegal. He intends to expand the deportations based on so -called “crimes of opinion”, which brings to the center of the debate precisely the first amendment of the American Constitution – the one that guarantees freedom of expression.
Trump demonstrates a clear commitment to alter the brake and counterweight system between the powers of the Republic, which constitutes more than a simple flirtation with authoritarianism. In his political view, however, he claims to be only fighting the authoritarianism of others – the elites, the courts, the public administration and their political opponents.
The signs indicate a domestic crisis of extreme gravity and still unpredictable consequences.
