Waack: Coup attempt in Bolivia is a symptom of the crisis in South America

This afternoon, an armored car from the Bolivian Army broke down the entrance door of the government palace, in the center of the capital, La Paz. The troop commander, General Juan José Zúñiga, and President Luis Arce, who, then fired the commander.

As quickly as they had arrived at the palace, the armed soldiers left the premises, leaving a huge question mark over the state of Bolivian politics, which has an electoral dispute scheduled for next year between the current president and his former mentor, Evo Morales. , which the angry military want to prevent from running for office.

The incident is serious when considering what it says about the various crises in South America that have hit Chile, Peru, Colombia, Venezuela, Argentina, Ecuador and Bolivia, in addition to Brazil itself.

It doesn’t matter if the governments are left or right, South America is today a huge space growing more slowly than comparable emerging countries in Asia, for example, which cannot deal with the usual problems: inequality, poverty, social injustice and delay in the technological race.

Brazil already has more influence on what happens in its neighbors. Today, it continues to chase old dreams of physically integrating South America. Really new to the subcontinent is the accelerated expansion of transnational organized crime.

Furthermore, there is a feeling of enormous frustration with the economy, the government, the system and politics, which today’s episode in Bolivia also demonstrates.
