Waack: Accusations appear to increase Trump’s political capital

What is happening in the United States is unprecedented. Unprecedented, a former president, Donald Trump, was booked this Tuesday (13), in a federal court, on charges of keeping secret documents at home that contain state secrets of the country. There are 37 heavy accusations.

It is also unprecedented that none of this seems to affect Trump’s chances of running again for the presidency of the country in 2024. On the contrary: it even seems to increase his political capital.

He continues to dominate the grid of Republican party pre-candidates, who are unable to publicly criticize him, afraid of repeating the lines of opponents of the Democratic party, as Trump presents himself as a victim of political persecution disguised as a judicial investigation.

In the very strong North American political polarization, the narrative has undeniable truth value for a huge portion of voters.

They are political universes closed in on themselves, and that do not communicate. The phenomenon is also familiar to us Brazilians.

Trump being Trump. What he does ends up becoming some kind of symbol. Part of the secret documents he carried with him when he left the White House he hid in the bathroom of his mansion in Florida.

Which perhaps indicates how he felt about state secrets.
