Voyager Station: the world’s first space hotel will open its doors in 2027

Can you imagine waking up in a room in the middle of space and with a view of the stars? Well, let me tell you that traveling to space as a tourist is no longer something of science fiction movies.

Space tourism is becoming a reality due to private spaceflight companies that have bet on the development of new means of transport to take humans to the stars, better known as “private astronauts”.

Private missions into space, such as Inspiration4 and DearMoon, in which the general public can spend a few days in space on a SpaceX company ship, are joined by space hotels.

Sacramento, California-based startup Orbital Assembly Corporation has announced that construction will begin in 2026 on the first space hotel, which is scheduled to open in 2027. Although the opening was originally scheduled for 2025, the coronavirus pandemic delayed the draft.

The Voyager Station promises to be a luxury complex throughout its 50 thousand square meters, which will house 280 guests and 112 crew members, who, in addition to enjoying an excellent view, will have a restaurant, a bar , a concert hall, a gym and even a movie theater.

For those interested in being part of the “new space age,” reservations are now open on the hotel’s website and you’ll have to shell out $5 million for a three-and-a-half-day stay.

As for the design, it will be in the shape of a Ferris wheel, following the example of science fiction movies such as 2001: A Space Odyssey and Interstellar. In addition, Voyager Station will create artificial gravity using the principles of centrifugal force, giving the station a gravity equal to one-sixth that of Earth.

The architect Tim Alatorre, one of those in charge of the project, explained to the magazine Design that the objective of the project is to make the space available to everyone.

Ultimately, going to space will be another option that people choose for their vacations, like going on a cruise or going to Disney World.

Guests will be able to relax in the three-tiered bar with a water fountain that “would obviously defy the laws of physics.” In addition, there will be an activities unit and a gym that at night will be transformed into a concert hall where “the best musical groups on Earth will play at the station while they rotate around the planet.”

The idea is that Voyager Station has all the hallmarks of a luxury hotel with cozy interiors. In this sense, it will have a holiday accommodation offer with villas of 500 square meters, which will be available to rent for a week, a month or permanently.

Each will have space for sixteen people, as well as three bathrooms and cooking facilities. Alongside the village, the space station will house several suites of 30 square meters hotel with private bathroom and capacity for two people.

Currently, there are many private companies that are developing space tourism. Recently, the PriestmanGoode transportation design studio developed a concept for a high-performance aircraft that will take space tourists on a “cruise” around the stratosphere.

London-based architectural firm Seymourpowell designed the interior of the Virgin Galactic spacecraft to carry six passengers on a semi-orbital flight into space.

In any case, it represents a great advance to know that space hotels will be a reality sooner than we had thought, well, in addition to Voyager Station, two more space properties are in development, such as Axiom Space’s AxStation and Orion Span’s Aurora Station.

So very soon the word “vacation” will stop exclusively evoking destinations with paradisiacal beaches, cosmopolitan cities and resplendent landscapes to bring to mind cosmic voyages on colossal rotating ships with incredible views across the long arc of the earth’s surface. Marvelous!
