Tourists from the US will have the right to visit EU member states in the coming months, provided they have been vaccinated against coronavirus, as stated by the President of the European Commission, the Ursula von der Leyen, in an interview published yesterday Sunday in The New York Times.
“Americans, as far as I know, use vaccines that have been approved by the European Medicines Agency (EMA),” he said. “This will allow freedom of movement, travel to the EU”, completed.
“One thing is clear: the 27 Member States will unconditionally accept anyone who has been immunized with EMA-approved vaccines,” Von der Layen told the New York newspaper.
The commission did not disclose the timetable, but the Times noted that the new rules are expected to take effect this summer as the immunization campaign intensifies in the United States and around the world.
The EMA has approved all three vaccines available in the US, Moderna, Pfizer / BioNTech and Johnson & Johnson.
Noting the “huge progress” in the US, Ms. Von der Layen estimated that the country is going to have immunized 70% of its adult population by mid-June.
The resumption of travel will depend on “the epidemiological situation, but things are improving in the US, and hopefully the same will happen in the EU,” he added.
The EU has virtually suspended all travel that was not considered absolutely necessary a year or more ago.
The pandemic swept the tourism sector in the Old Continent.
EU member states agreed this month to promote select “vaccination passports”, travel permits that will allow people with COVID-19 immunization certificates who have recovered from an infection or are tested negative to travel more easily.
